Primary hemostasis

In case of endothelial injury, platelet adhesion occurs mediated by von Willebrand factor (VWF). The following release of ADP (Adenosine-diphosphate) induces a platelet aggregation process, which in turn causes the release of a couple of important biologically effective substances (viscous metamorphosis). The aggregated platelets not only form the primary wound closure, but, via released platelet factor 3, also take part in activating the plasmatic coagulation system. Platelet function tests are therefore of great importance for the diagnosis of platelet anomalies and for the monitoring of aggregation inhibitor treatments.
