At the beginning of the 20th century, the German internist Paul Morawitz laid the foundation of modern coagulation diagnostics with his initial description of blood coagulation. Science had to go a long way from his findings to the discovery of coagulation factors in the 40s and 50s, to the development of the first coagulation assays and finally to automated assays and modern anticoagulants.
